Is it the HDMI port?

Your console powers on but the picture is wrong or missing. Most of the time that's the HDMI port, sometimes it's the chip behind it, and sometimes it isn't the console at all. Here's how to tell them apart, in plain language.

Rule out the easy stuff first (five minutes)

If any step brings the picture back, you're done — no repair needed.

  1. Swap the HDMI cable

Use a cable you know works — ideally one that is driving a picture from another device right now. For a PS5 use the cable that came with it or another 4K-rated cable; cheap or aging cables cause more "No Signal" screens than consoles do.

  2. Change the input, then change the TV

Cycle every HDMI input on the TV, then try a different TV or monitor. If another device gets a picture through the same port and cable, the TV side is fine and the console is the suspect.

  3. Power-cycle properly

Shut the console down, unplug it from the wall for 30 seconds, plug it back in and start it. Rest mode and quick restarts don't count.

  4. Reset the video output

PS5: with the console off, hold the power button about seven seconds until the second beep to enter Safe Mode, then choose "Change Video Output". Xbox Series X|S: with the console off, hold the power and eject buttons (or power and pair on the Series S) about ten seconds to boot in low-resolution mode. If the picture comes back, pick a resolution your TV supports.

What each symptom usually means

Still no picture after the checks? These four patterns cover almost every HDMI fault we see on the bench. None of them means the console is dead.

No signal at all

The TV reports no input even though the console is clearly on. The usual cause is a damaged HDMI port — bent pins or cracked solder joints from a yanked cable, a move, or a console tipping over. On a PS5 the second suspect is the retimer IC behind the port.

Black screen, but you hear audio

Game or menu sound through a headset or the TV while the screen stays black means the console is running and the handshake is half-working: the video lanes fail while audio and control data get through. That is classic damage to one side of the port's pins — and on a PS5, a common retimer sign.

Flicker, dropouts, or the picture cuts out when the cable moves

Intermittent contact: a loose or cracked port, or pads lifting from the board underneath it. It gets worse over time, and wiggling the cable makes it come and go.

Fix: PS5 HDMI port repair or Xbox Series X|S HDMI repair. Stop wiggling the cable in the meantime — every bend widens the crack.

Works on one TV but not another

Often a handshake issue: a port with one marginal pin can pass on a forgiving TV and fail on a stricter one, or the console is set to a resolution the second TV can't accept. Run the video-output reset above with a known-good cable. If it still only works on one screen, the port is marginal and will fail outright eventually.

PS5 only? The PS5 no-signal guide goes deeper on the port-versus-retimer question.

What the repair costs

PS5 HDMI port replacement is $189 (intro price, PS5 Pro included). Xbox Series X|S HDMI port replacement is $189 (intro price). If a PS5's retimer IC is also involved, the combined port-and-chip repair is $239. Every price includes free diagnosis, a 90-day warranty, photo proof before you pay, and free return shipping. You pay only a $50 deposit up front, and it credits toward the total.

HDMI port questions

Can I replace the HDMI port myself?

It's a surface-mounted connector with 19 fine-pitch pins on a multilayer board. The job needs hot air, a microscope and, more often than not, pad repair underneath the old port. One slip lifts traces and turns a $189 repair into a board rescue. Unless you already do micro-soldering, we'd recommend against it.

Do I need to send the cable, controller or power supply?

No. Console only. Keep your cables and controllers — they aren't part of the diagnosis and they only add shipping weight.

How do you know it's the port and not something else?

The board goes under the microscope: the port pins, the pads and traces under them, and on a PS5 the retimer stage are all checked before anything is quoted. You get the quote with photos of what we found, and you only pay for the repair the evidence supports.

What if it turns out not to be the HDMI port?

Diagnosis is free either way. If it's a different fault we quote that instead. If you'd rather not go ahead, the deposit covers the return shipping and the console comes back to you.

Does the repair work on a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro?

Port replacements, yes, on every PS5 model. PS5 Slim consoles with encoder-chip damage are evaluated case-by-case — you'll know before you pay anything.
