Nintendo Switch Won't Charge?
Before you shop for a new console: a Switch that stopped charging almost always has a worn-out USB-C port, and that's a routine board-level fix — with your saves untouched. Work through the quick checks below first; they solve a surprising share of "dead" Switches for free.

Try this first
Try a different cable AND a different charger
Test both, not just one — USB-C cables die quietly and take chargers' reputations with them. Borrow a known-good USB-C PD charger from a laptop or phone if you can.
Give a flat battery real time
A deeply drained Switch can sit on a charger for 20–30 minutes showing absolutely nothing before it wakes up. Plug it in, walk away, and check back before assuming the worst.
Look inside the USB-C port with a flashlight
Pocket lint compacts at the back of the port and blocks the connector from seating. If you see debris, a gentle pass with a wooden or plastic toothpick can clear it — never metal, which shorts and scratches pins.
Try the dock, then the cable — and compare
If the dock charges it but a cable doesn't (or vice versa), note that. It narrows the fault and is genuinely useful information to include in your repair request.
What's actually broken when none of that works
The USB-C connector on a Switch takes thousands of insertions over its life — plus every bump while it's docked or plugged in. Two failures account for nearly every not-charging Switch we see:
- A worn or damaged USB-C port — $129, any Switch model. The solder joints and internal contacts fatigue until charging becomes intermittent, angle-dependent, and finally dead. The connector is replaced under the microscope, with damaged pads rebuilt. Full details on theSwitch charging port repair page.
- Charge-IC damage on the board — quote-based. If the chip that manages power negotiation fails (electrical stress and out-of-spec accessories are the usual stories), the port can be perfect and the console still won't take a charge. That's component-level work, quoted with photo evidence after diagnosis.
If a drink was involved, read theliquid damage repair page first — spilled-on consoles follow a different evaluation path. And for everything else on this console, see theNintendo Switch repair hub.

Switch charging questions
Is it the battery or the charging port?
The port, most of the time. A telltale sign is charging that depends on cable angle or pressure — that's mechanical wear, not a battery problem. Batteries that are genuinely worn tend to charge fine but drain fast. On the bench we measure both, so the answer comes from instruments rather than guesswork.
Is the price the same for Switch Lite and Switch OLED?
Yes — USB-C charge port replacement is $129 across the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. The internals differ a bit, but the job is priced the same for all three.
Did my third-party dock or charger cause this?
Maybe, maybe not. Some early third-party docks negotiated power out of spec and damaged charge chips, which earned all of them a scary reputation. Current accessories from reputable brands are generally fine. If your Switch died right after using a particular dock or charger, mention it in the request — it points diagnosis at the charge IC instead of the port.
Will I lose my game saves?
Port replacement never touches storage — saves, profiles, and games stay exactly where they are. Since Switch saves are harder to back up than most consoles, it's worth enabling Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup if you subscribe, purely as transit insurance.
